“I give you the end of a golden string,
Only wind it into a ball…”
—William Blake
Artist Statement
Emma’s practice is an answer to Blake’s call to follow a golden string into the liminal. Like a rhizome, sprawling out below the earth, her practice is non-linear, unfolding across media and experience. Prints, pigments, poems, and photographs are entangled layers of a palimpsest.
In this way, Emma’s practice explores the connection between outer and inner landscapes. Rooted in process and shaped by risk, her work reflects a deep engagement with place and materials.
Collecting and grinding earth pigments from the South Downs, Emma works in conversation with the land that she has grown up in, embracing experimentation. Photography and walking intersect her work in a psychogeography approach, capturing her transformational encounters with the terrain. Monoprint brings the unexpected, offering space for reflection and liminality. Poetry is then the thread that stitches together the other elements of Emma’s work. It is the golden string that weaves the outer and inner.
Each piece is part of an ongoing journey of self-discovery; it is a way of mapping both the world and the self. It is an invitation for you to follow a golden string too.
